She was being kicked out of the hospital, because the insurance company at the time said they were done paying, and we had to figure out where to take her. The hospital had cleared her to fly home, and the insurance company wanted to do exactly that, but when I asked the passenger, she said she did not feel safe to fly. Next is a screenshot of my sent emails looking for temporary work, along with one of the emails so you can read it for context. I sent close to 30 of these. Ten days after the accident, here I am looking for temporary work so I could stay and support the passenger.

Before I move on, I want to draw your attention to the timestamps — 4 in the morning, on different days. The reason is that I would leave the hospital every night around midnight, then bike 30 minutes back to my hotel. Because I had a dog I hadn't been with all day, I would spend the next three hours walking with her. Once she fell asleep, I got to work on things like this. Then around 7 or 8, I would either wake up or get ready to head back to the hospital.

Reaching Out to a Church

The image below is one I sent to a church. I was asking for help, advice, and even some items for the passenger, as well as asking if anyone in their congregation would be willing to come say hello to her. You'll also see that even though the hospital was threatening to discharge her again, I didn't give up — I made accommodations at the hotel I was staying in and was prepared to take care of her there.

I fought against the hospital and her insurance company, and she ended up staying until she flew back to France — after she felt better and safe enough to fly, a month after she first arrived. Every week brought a new threat of discharge, and every week I found a way for her to stay. Just in case, I put everything in place so I could care for her and keep her there as long as possible.

If this is what "taking advantage" of someone looks like — yes, I did it, and I would do it again for any human being.
