Hyphens Ashes

Andrew hasn't said much about this yet, but there was another dog before me, three actually that he rescued; but one i can smell. He says his name was Hyphen. he talks about him like he is still with us. Sometimes, look around for him and there are times, I can tell Andrew still does look for him when he is up. you know in those moments when you are barely awake and your brain hasnt turned on. When I am that way, I forget to wait to go outside to pee.

But today seems hard on Andrew. He sat on the edge of his bed and cried. I am not certain how long he had been there, since I was still sleeping. He only stopped when got up and licked his leg. Picking me up, he cradled me until I fell back sleep. His chest buried me as I felt his body shudder with each tear he let out. He really did love this Hyphen and he says his biggest pain right now is that he never got to keep any of his new promises. They had a good life together, but then were homeless several times. I do not know what this is like since without a home too but I at least had the dog pounds I was transferred to. He says they slept on park benches sometimes and some of their meals were crackers and catchup packets. He talked about how once he had enough money for a place for them to stay and food for Hyphen; but it didn't leave him anything.

He talked about how hungry he was but he felt better knowing they had a roof over their head and that Hyphen was eating every day. He says sometimes, Hyphen wouldnt eat, as if he knew that Andrew wasn't and those days made him feel special --and during those times, he really needed anything to help him feel thay way. Andrew hasn't talked about why he is gone, but i hope he does soon. I can tell it is killing him inside as he holds that in. And i hope he tells me more about Hyphen. He mentioned a time when he went camping with Hyphen and his two other dogs, Lefty and Patton. It was the middle of winter, on a mountain and they just went out for a weekend to get away. He talked about all of the animals they all chased and how it was the first time all three dogs got alonog as one pack. This camping sounds cool, but I dunno, I may really like shelter and not chasing animals (for now).

Anyway. To Hyphen, I never knew you but I play with some of your toys and get to hear about some of your life. Thank you for taking care of Andrew through his hardest times of his life. I will try to look out for him too.
